Driving sustainable energy growth in South Yorkshire
Project overview
Client: Harmony EnergyLocation: South Yorkshire
Sector: Energy
Project status: Approved
The energy team at PWA Planning gained planning approval for a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Yorkshire, contributing to the UK’s drive toward a low-carbon energy future.
What we did
The scheme features 16 high efficiency battery energy storage units and eight transformer units, that will help balance the national electricity grid, enabling greater use of renewable energy and improving energy resilience.
This scheme will help store surplus electricity during periods of low demand and release it back to the grid when needed most, supporting the shift toward more sustainable energy sources.
The development site is situated within the green belt, which meant our planning strategy had to demonstrate exceptional circumstances to justify the proposal.
Working closely with the client and technical consultants, we developed a robust planning case that highlighted the national importance of the infrastructure and its alignment with energy and climate policy objectives.
Comprehensive supporting documents, including landscape and visual assessments, ecological reports, and a detailed planning statement, formed part of the planning submission, ensuring all environmental and technical considerations were addressed.
Engaging proactively with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, we led discussions to resolve key planning issues and ensure the application aligned with local and national policy frameworks.
Our approach balanced the technical needs of the development with the sensitivities of the site’s green belt location.
