Facilitating major training ground improvements for Huddersfield Town FC

Project overview

Client: Huddersfield Town Association Football Club
Location: Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Sector: Sports and Leisure
Project status: Planning approved

We helped Huddersfield Town gain planning consent for a major overhaul of its training facilities to support its aspirations to continue competing at the highest levels of English football.

What we did

Working alongside the project team, PWA helped bring forward a planning application that would facilitate £6m of investment in the football club’s training ground at the Canalside Sports Complex.

As well as improvements to the training pitches and ancillaries, the original planning application also included provision for a new three-storey main building that would offer accommodation provision for the club’s academy players.

Our work on this project included pre-application engagement with the local planning authority, community engagement, putting together and submitting the planning application, and post submission support which included attendance at planning committee.

There were multiple issues to deal with as part of the planning application which included drainage, coal mining, loss of employment land, and the loss of a bowling green facility.

The application was approved and allowed the club to make significant upgrades to the training complex with the potential to go ahead with the main building in the future if it is required.
