Delivering large scale energy storage with Harmony Energy

Project overview

Client: Harmony Energy
Location: Hurstpierpoint, Sussex
Sector: Energy
Project status: Complete

Working with Harmony Energy we helped secure planning permission for a utility scale battery energy storage project, one of the largest in the UK.

What we did

Harmony partnered on the project with Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a leading global provider of renewable energy projects.

The project has created a 34MW / 68MWh battery storage project near Burgess Hill in West Sussex known as Contego.

Completed in 2021, the plant has a system of 28 Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries, providing the capability to store energy from renewable sources and offer peak-time flexibility to the National Grid.

Our energy planning team acted as planning consultants on the project, managing the planning application, including various s73 amendments and discharge of conditions.

This was a greenfield site which created some local opposition to the scheme. However, the sensitive landscaping was designed to ensure views from the site’s nearest neighbours were acceptable.

What our client said

“We have worked with PWA for several years on multiple projects, including Contego. PWA have always provided an excellent service throughout the planning process and I would not hesitate recommending their services.”

Peter Kavanagh, Harmony Energy
