Creating a new neighbourhood on a derelict site in Wigan
Project overview
Client: Stanley Investments and Jigsaw Homes GroupLocation: Wigan
Sector: Housing
Project status: Planning approved / complete
Working alongside the developer and registered provider, PWA helped our clients to bring a development of over 70 homes to fruition while regenerating a site which had been derelict for over 40 years.
What we did
This development helped to transform a former cattle market site that had lain empty since the 1970s with new homes for affordable rent.
Initially, PWA helped to run a public consultation with nearby residents, giving them information about the proposed development and inviting them to give their feedback on the plans.
We also led the full planning application and managing the entire planning process.
Being close to the town centre and Wigan’s two railway stations, we were able to show how this was a sustainable brownfield site.
On the site itself there were various technical constraints to overcome, mainly in relation to visual appearance and site stability, and in achieving the consent in line with requirements of the applicants.
The scheme gained unanimous approval and now provides a mix of one, two and three-bedroom properties for affordable rent.
What our client said
“We were very pleased with the comprehensive support that PWA provided Stanley with on this complex development. The work that Louise and the team undertook from preapplication, consultation through to final decision ensured a unanimous and timely approval.”
