Planning approved for three new energy storage schemes

PWA Planning has helped gain planning consent for three new energy storage schemes across the UK.

We have advised batteries and energy storage specialist Arenko Cleantech on achieving planning consent for two 49.5MW energy storage facilities – one in York and one in Liverpool.

Meanwhile, planning permission has also been granted on behalf of Harmony Energy for a 49.5MW facility in Salisbury.

Louise Leyland, Associate and energy development lead at PWA Planning, said: “Investment in energy storage projects continues to grow and we’ve seen the industry accelerating its plans for new facilities in the last 12-months.

“We’re proud to be playing our role in helping our clients develop the UK’s clean energy infrastructure and achieving success in what can be a complex planning environment.”

Arenko’s scheme in York will be located close to an existing National Grid substation on a site off the Osbaldwick Link Road. Meanwhile, its scheme in Liverpool will see an energy storage facility created next to an electricity substation off Lister Drive in the Stanley area of Liverpool.

Harmony Energy will develop its latest energy storage scheme on land adjacent to Salisbury substation. It’s one of several Harmony schemes that PWA Planning has helped secure planning consent for in the last 12-months.

Pete Grogan, director at Harmony Energy, said: “With grid, land rights and most recently planning permission all secured, the Salisbury project is now ‘construction-ready’

“We are entering a critical period for the future of the UK’s energy supply. Coal-fired power is on track to be phased out by 2025 and with strict targets to decarbonise our system through the continued rollout of low-carbon generation, utility-scale energy storage systems like these are key to maintaining security, stability and flexibility.”
