PWA Planning has helped gain a planning consent for an innovative energy storage project in London’s green belt.
Working on behalf of Harmony Energy Storage, PWA Planning submitted a planning application for a 49.5MW energy storage facility on land at Clay Tye Farm, Upminster.
The scheme, in London borough of Havering just inside the M25, will connect to the nearby Warley National Grid electricity substation, providing vital grid balancing services to help manage supply and demand.
The scheme is one of a number energy storage projects around the UK for which PWA Planning is advising Harmony Energy Storage.
Louise Leyland, associate at PWA Planning, said: “Energy storage represents a huge growth area for diversifying farm operations and generating income from land.
“Harmony is one of the companies leading the way in this field and we’re pleased to have gained a successful planning outcome for this particular scheme.
“This project was also pleasing because previous applications for renewable energy schemes on the land had been turned down, so the project helps the landowner to generate new income from the land.”
Peter Kavanagh, a director of Harmony Energy Storage, added: “We’re delighted to receive planning permission on our largest energy storage site. Louise and her team at PWA have delivered an excellent service throughout the process.”
PWA Planning worked with environmental planning and design consultancy EDP on the landscape appraisal and landscape planning aspects of the application.
