PWA achieves consent for new low-carbon affordable homes in Cumbrian town

Brampton project

Plans to create an exemplar low-carbon community in Cumbria featuring 75 new affordable homes will be approved following a successful planning application led by PWA.

The homes – a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties – will be built alongside an existing settlement at Warren Fields in Brampton, Carlisle, providing new affordable housing options for local people.

PWA is acting on behalf of applicant The Trustees of Greenside Estate and worked alongside experienced architect, landscape architect and urban design practice Levitt Bernstein to achieve an outline planning consent for the new homes.

Situated on a 10-acre site between the Newcastle Road and Station Road, the design for the scheme incorporates ‘The Garth’, a large open communal space at the centre of the development.

The site will also deliver an opportunity for five custom-build homes in addition to the 75 affordable homes.

Dan Hughes, planning director at PWA Planning, commented: “We’re proud to have played our role alongside an outstanding project team to achieve a planning consent for this forward-thinking affordable housing development.

“The homes have been designed to achieve low carbon outcomes through features like heat pumps and solar panels, significantly bettering the energy efficiency standards of current building regulations. It’s a development that will use natural resources intelligently to create a sustainable legacy for future generations.”

Dan added: “This was an interesting application process which included working with the ecology team on mitigation measures to achieve nutrient neutrality, with the proposed development lying within the River Eden Special Area of Conservation.”

Other key members of the project team included Civic Projects, advising on the affordable homes delivery, Dynamic Transport Planning, providing highways advice, TRP providing drainage and engineering services, and Water Environment providing advice on the nutrient neutrality solution.
