Plans passed for 15 affordable rent apartments in Birkenhead

Planning permission has been granted for a new housing development that will create 15 new affordable apartments in Rock Ferry, Birkenhead.

The scheme, located on the corner of New Chester Road and Rock Lane West, will be delivered by developer Stanley Investments and Wirral Methodist Housing Association, which will make the homes available for affordable rent.

PWA Planning secured full planning permission for the development on behalf of Stanley Investments and Wirral Methodist Housing Association.

Each apartment will feature an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area, alongside a double bedroom, bathroom and store, while an on-site parking space and room for a bicycle in the scheme’s cycle store will be available to each property. The red-brick building has been designed sensitively to reflect the local area.

Joe Davis, planner at PWA Planning, said: “The site was disused and had previously been earmarked for seven open-market homes, but our client saw the opportunity to make use of the site to create affordable apartments aimed at local people.

“The site lies within a long-established residential area in Rock Ferry that’s also a highly sustainable location for development. Being close to great transport links, as well as being offered for affordable rent, these new apartments will bring a brownfield site back into use while helping local people live more affordably.”

The three-storey block of one-bedroom flats has received grant funding from Homes England. It will breathe fresh life into the brownfield site, which has lain vacant since a former car showroom was demolished in 2007.

Paul Carhart, Chief Executive at Wirral Methodist Housing Association added: “We are delighted that we are now able to proceed with this fantastic scheme of much needed new homes in Rock Ferry.

“Wirral Methodist HA is committed to bringing more new homes to people in housing need in Wirral,  and we believe this development will enhance our objective of helping to create thriving communities.”

Neil Hughes, Associate Director at Stanley Investments, added: “By reusing a complex brownfield site previously thought to be unviable, this development represents a classic example of regeneration providing new affordable homes to meet an identified need in an accessible location and delivering the holistic approach necessary to real sustainable development. We are very pleased to be delivering this scheme to WMHA.”

Eden Building Design acted as architect for the scheme.
